Creative Landscape
I have chosen Creative Landscape photography because I was influenced by ideas from other photographers, such as editing the landscape to create interesting scenes of tall and exaggerated buildings, hills / mountains. I am hoping to be fortunate to be able to access these locations. My ideas for this method / style of photography vary from natural landscapes to city scapes. I intend to incorporate the use of a creative landscape by using Photoshop to enhance or alter the landscape images, such as double exposures and experimenting with geometric shapes . I feel that this will be a good concept for me to explore as I enjoy taking pictures whilst travelling to get diverse and eccentric images.
Matt Wisniewski
This image, from the Miles To Go collection, portrays a male model with a landscape image incorporated into the models head (hair). The model's hair has been altered to be spiked to give the image of mountain peaks. Matt is a self taught collage artist born in 1990 in Philadelphia currently based in Brooklyn, NYC. In his work he uses infusion of natural elements, such as clouds mountains and forests, into the heads and the bodies of his visual characters. Currently he is finishing a computer science degree at the Rochester institute of technology and is working as a web developer. In his free time, he speaks his dreams through poetic collages. This photo may have a hidden meaning as an expression for his head being in the clouds. The use of denaturation gives it a grey scale effect. The image processing and techniques were all created using Photoshop. The software enables him to cut and edit the portrait image to create a double exposure by incorporating a landscape. This results in the creative aspect of a Creative Landscape. Personally i like the way that Wisniewski chooses particular elements to recreate specific features of the models in the portrait images. I would like to experiment using this technique on others and my own portraits.

My try at his work
With this image I have experimented with Wisniewski's approach. After examining his ideas in detail I found some some eye catching images for me to recreate his work. Using Photoshop and double exposure I incorporated the image of a wave into a model's head. The line of the wave resembles her hairline.

Shoot One
Shoot one plan
My idea for this shoot is to experiment using the method and technique used by Matt Wisniewski. I am going to recreate his work by getting a model, shooting a portrait shot of his head and then I am going to take an image of a landscape from outside and incorporate that image onto his face, in the same way that Matt Wisniewski does in his images using the technique of double exposure.
In this image I have used the natural element of the clouds to emphasise the height of the tall buildings upon his head. I wanted to reflect the visual metaphor 'head in the clouds' from the image below from Wisniewski's work. The process used for this image was created on Photoshop where I used tools such as thresholds, magic wand and opacity to create the illusion of the buildings upon the model's head. I have desaturated the image to create a monotone image where the different aspects blend in together giving it a mellow feeling.

Shoot Two
Shoot two Plan:
To develop the idea further from shoot one I identified two more similar photos by Wisniewski that were from a different collection (the Landscape Collection). I wanted to experiment with facial features by changing their opacity in Photoshop or just completely removing them entirely. The images appropriate for these particular adaptations were from my trip to the Giants Causeway In Northern Ireland. I intended to take images of the hills as that is a common theme in Wisniewski's Landscape Collection. I will take images of the same model.

I was inspired by these images because they have artistically removed features of the face and replaced or overlay them with landscape images. I like the way in picture two Wisniewski has cut off the top of the models forehead and what remains at the top is replaced as a mountain peak, I have tried to replicate that in image two and three of my own images.
In the first image I have taken a photo of the Giants Causeway. I was not happy with the way the image fitted with the model's face as the landscape didn't resemble the shape of the models head. I changed the background to a less opaque version to the image inside of the models head as I felt it gave a wider perspective of the landscape. I decided not to desaturate the image as opposed to the image from shoot one.
The third image I feel is the most successful as It has the most interesting shape and design/detail. The landscape image was also taken at the Giants Causeway it portrays a side view of the hexagonal rocks and a view of the hills in the background. The contemplative atmosphere of the image links to the unusual feeling of the Giants Causeway. The hint of bright colour on the left side of the face emphasises the features of the face and contrasts with the grey scale and darker colours of the rest of the image. |
The Finished ImagesIn the second image I have focused on replicating the element of texture from the second image from above. I have experimented with the method of macro photography on a log found in one of the fields near the Giants Causeway and I have focused on the uneven, rough texture midway through the image, which was effective. In the editing process I have taken inspiration from the second image also as I have removed part of the models head leaving the shape of the logs edge.

Peer Critique
Owen Piercy Critique
The pictures that you have taken and edited are very good it looks like it takes time and a lot of Photoshop skill .
Harrison Phelps Critique
Peer Critique : Your work is very creative and a clear representation of your chosen artist, this will allow you to get a better grade overall.. You need to work on you Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG), as at the moment there are a few simple grammar mistakes , to be able to boost your grade you need to fix this.
Next Steps : Your next steps (in the following shoots) will be to experiment more, and not be afraid to develop some more risky ideas
Improvements : To improve you could use different models and experiment with different hair styles and skin colors. Also with different backgrounds. This may add a splash of brightness to your images

Dan Mountford
Mountford is a 21 year old photographer illustrator and editor. Most of his images were created in a darkroom by placing one negative on top of another to develop a third image. Perhaps the most interesting thing about his work is the subject matter, the use of architecture, religious iconography, animals and flora. It is these subjects, combined with the complex method of creating the image, that creates a simple image evoking a dreamlike atmosphere or as he calls it:
a visual journey through our minds, in quiet, where the reality of everyday life does not come. The image to the left combines the urban environment and the natural environment with a portrait image of a female model. |
How To Create a Double Exposure
Shoot Three
Shoot Plan:
For this shoot I wanted to explore similar ideas from a different photographer. Dan Mountford's work followed the same outcome with different processes. His photos inspired me to develop my ideas further with architecture and trying to incorporate the natural lines of the face and neck. I am going to take portrait images in the studio with lights and a tripod to get depth and contrast in the image of the models face. I intend to take the images at different angles so that I have a range of images to choose from when deciding what landscape image to take for the second layer of exposure for the final product. For the landscape image I want to take images of urban areas and focus on line and texture of the images, that relate to the similar images found in Mountford's work.

Critical analysis:
I am very pleased with the outcome of this shoot and the development and progress from shoot one. I was influenced by the style of Mountford's work. Mountford referred to the metaphor 'visual journey through the mind' and I have developed this idea. In the second image the train track could represent the literal 'journey...through the mind'. The gap in the models head creates a thought provoking atmosphere. By shoot three I have developed my use of line as the lines of the train track and the lines of the buildings compliment the shape of the models head and neck. In the first image I have used a similar idea to my first shoot with the buildings incorporated onto the models head but I feel the image in this is much better as the buildings blend better into the face and the buildings contrast the darkness of the grey background and the use of line is more predominant in the third shoot. In the second shoot the image has a closer correlation to the artist (Mountford) than the other shoots as the subjects in my Images relate to the subjects in the images in Mountfords shoot. Also in this shoot I have added more contrast in the image which gives the image more strength and depth compared to the earlier shoots. The process of theses images vary but an example is displayed below. In the third image |
Process of Editing Landscape Photoshopping
Shoot Four
Shoot Plan :
For this shoot I want to take landscape images of traditional buildings, so I am going to go to the small town of Castle Coombe where the buildings are left in their traditional fashion without interfering aspects of modern scenery. Also on this shoot I am going to stop at various locations e.g Willsbridge Mill and Wick where there are other landscape opportunities to capture. I am hoping to capture some images of fast flowing waterfalls and slow them down with a longer shutter speed. With the landscape images I am going to create some double exposure portrait images in the style of Dan Mountford.

Critical Analysis :
This shoot was a success as I have captured interesting images of traditional architecture and experimented with long exposures of fast flowing waterfalls which was my initial idea for this shoot. I have experimented with colour in this shoot with three images in black and white. I have also looked at texture with several images having a close up angle on interesting textures such as various rocks surfaces.
For the images of the waterfall I wanted to experiment with capturing the motion of the waterfall. I have focused on the element of line with the images of the bridge and of the stream as the lines of them lead into the rest of the image and transfer the viewers vision through the image.
The images of the portraits (double exposures) have turned out well as the previously mentioned leading lines also follow through the image of the models head. This time I have experimented with new models with different facial features that emphasise the landscape images well. I feel that the images reflect the inspiration of Dan Mountford's images. I particularly like his black and white images as they give a thought provoking atmosphere.

Shoot Five
Shoot Plan :
For this shoot I wanted to experiment with different aspects of creative landscape as I want to find a new direction to take my ideas forward. Firstly I want to take pictures of cliffs and hills when I go to Devon and I also want to take pictures of stars so I can edit them in post editing. Additionally I want to try and create a star vortex both using long exposures to be able to capture the stars in the night sky. This should be successful as there is not much light pollution in the fields of Devon so there will be less interference when taking the images. Also with the landscape images I want to take images and modify them into images with shapes inverted into them.

Also with the landscape images I want to take images and modify them into images with shapes inverted into them.
For these images I wanted to create a false perception of a stary night with three levels of different types of sky eventually becoming quite fake and false looking with the last image. These Images were just experimentation but I feel they came out quite well so I included them.
The first image was originally of a daylight image of a seaside cliff with a waterfall running down the side of it. They were taken with a slow shutter speed so that I could smoothed the motion of the waterfall. Later I edited it to look like it was taken at night, changing the colour to a purple/blue colour giving it a night time atmosphere. Finally I added the star image I took prior to taking the waterfall image to the background of the cliff.
For the second image I experimented with light vortex's by using the original star image and making a process which rotates and moves the image to create the vortex style of star image.
The third image has the same star image from the first image but I have added a planet and some clouds.
The third image has the same star image from the first image but I have added a planet and some clouds.
This is my favourite Image from this shoot. It is my favourite as it changes the perception of normal landscape images therefore making it a creative landscape. The image was created with only one image of a cliff face where I have copied and repeated the image on top of it self to create an unnatural looking cliff face that hangs over a seeming obis. The Image has no bottom as it looks like there is an endless obis beneath the rocks. The Image uses colour to emphasise the supernatural atmosphere of the image as the original green grass/moss found on cliffs/rocks has been changed to a more colourful and interesting fading blue and red.
|
For this image I have used a rectangle of the image and inverted it on top of the image. I then made a mask layer on top of that layer and removed some of the sky to help it blend with the original layer beneath. I feel that this image was successful as it is interesting yet still simple. This image contains many textures consisting of the overgrown shrubbery and the stones of the wall.
|
Experiment
For this experiment I wanted to try and use the space inside of a head to hold a landscape image. I wanted to make the landscape image as if it was taken on another planet. I used the picture of the log and duplicated it multiple time and placed it in a way that they for the shape of a mountain side. I have done this because the pictures of hills were not as dramatic and did not give the feel of another world's surface. The sky was another separate image from a previous shoot where I took an image of the stars with a long exposure to capture them, I have also modified the sky to add some more stars in to give it that dramatic affect I am aiming for. However the image of the moon and the clouds were not taken in the image of the stars I have edited this in to give the same affect. The person in the foreground grabs attention and gives a sense of scale to the image. The background gives the image texture although I have desaturated and turned down the opacity of it so the focus is on the landscape more. You could call this a fake landscape as the image is pieced together by many different images but I think this is what makes the landscape creative.
Go Sleep
Go Sleep is not a very well known instagram photographer with little over...followers. I like his style of editing and would like to introduce it to my images. His editing style is very dark and gives off a mysterious atmosphere. His images are of different landscapes and objects constructed together just like mine. Therefor I think his style will be perfect to introduce to my work. He uses the element of colour effectively and maintains a dark and eerie colour pallet. His images often contain people or figures as a focal point within them which is also something that I would like to introduce to my work.

Shoot six
For this shoot I wanted to continue with the space theme and I wanted to implement the technique of forming the hills and cliffs to make a more eye pleasing image. I also wanted to implement more interesting skies to the image to create a more incising image. I want to take images of the rough and jagged sides of the cliffs/rocks and to capture rough and rugged texture. I also want to edit images to be black and white to create a minimalist atmosphere and contrast that with some splashes of colour.
Critical analysis:
I believe that these images were successful with their interesting design and their outer space aura. My favourite aspect of the editing of the images is the colour as it completely changes the feel of the images. I have also increased the contrast to make the hillside darker and make it look more like it was from another planet. For the first image I wanted to create a cave out of the images of rocky hillsides I had taken. I feel that this has been achieved but after looking at it I think that the image needs some other details e.g a person standing on the hill. For the second image from the top I tried to implement a scene of a floating island in the sky. I feel I have achieved this but it could have been done with more accuracy. I also like the way the road at the foreground of the image creates a leading line towards the interesting sky and hillsides.

Critical analysis:
For this collection of images I wanted a completely different aesthetic to the first images of this shoot. For these images I went with a very monotone approach sometimes including slight splashes of colour and different shapes. I have tried to alter/move the hills of the landscape to create a more interesting and enticing image. I especially like the top two images from this section of the shoot. With the top image on the left I like the extreme design of the cliff/rock and the simpleness of the shed on top of the rock. I also like the faded rock behind the main rock as I feel that it adds dimension and detail to the image. In the second image I am pleased with the way the texture of the cave brings an essence of colour to the grey scale background of the image.

Experiment
This image was taken of a cliff face in a small town called Clovelly. The town has been preserved to keep the nostalgic feel of the town for tourists to experience the old sea side town.I have edited the composition of the cliff side. I have also desaturated the images and changed the hue of the colours to a yellow colour and I have edited a silhouette onto the edge of the rock and some birds to add some subject to the image.
Edge of the world Images
This image was created by cropping and inverting the image horizontally and flip the image 90 degrees and put a layer mask on top of that to clip the image under the other. This image was taken when I went to Greece. The image is of a rock in the ocean which I observed on my way to a near by town called Lindos. I have edited the images colours with a levels adjustment layer where I made the blues a more green colour. I also created a fake light source where I made a selection of the image using the lasso tool and increased the brightness with a curves layer.
The images below are the images used within the image above.
The images below are the images used within the image above.
Experimentation
For this experiment I wanted to create a landscape in a flat almost cartoon style. I took inspiration from some art from a game called Firewatch which is where I got my colour pallet from for the colour scheme for the hills and mountains. I feel that this image was very successful but it could have had some more detail like the watch tower from the Firewatch art.I hope to do more Images like this later on in my project.
Process of editing
Andreas Lie
Andrea Lie creates breath taking double exposure images of both humans and animals. I like the way that Lei uses landscapes to give the portrait images texture. Lei uses the landscape images to give the portraits colour that helps the images to stand out. Lei uses the subtle features of the face to show in some of her images to enhance the perception of the double exposure. She also uses landscapes that reflect the habitat of the animal and in some images she shows the destruction of the habitat within the image of the animals

Shoot Eight
Shoot plan :
For this shoot I am taking inspiration from the previous artist that I have looked at (Andreas Lie). I was influenced by the way that he uses animals for his double exposures. I also like the way that he uses trees within the faces of the models/animals. I am hoping to include images of some animals for this shoot whilst also capturing some images of scenery and landscapes to include in the double exposures. I plan to go to a local footpath which pases through a horse field and eventually leads to a old windmill whilst passing trees and landscape views along the way for this shoot.

Critical Analysis:
This shoot is successful as I have achieved what I intended with the shoot plan. I have experimented with using animals as influenced by Andreas Lie. I have attempted to create two images which are influenced by lie's work by taking an image of a horse and creating a landscape of trees and structures on the back/neck of the animal. I have taken a more rustic look when editing the images as I have added grain and scratch textures to the images to add some depth to the image and give the image a more enticing look and feel. I have also fulfilled the rustic look by desaturating the image to remove colour to look like it has more character to the image. For the other Image I wanted to construct a fantasy landscape. The image was created by using different layers, such as the sky the windmill and the stars. I have tried to emphasise the theme of fantasy by choosing and enhancing vibrant colours. I have added the clouds at the bottom to make the silhouette image of the windmill look as if it was much higher in the air than it was. I also tried to enhance the perception of the height of the windmill when taking the original image as I tried to exclude any background or ground so that all you could see around the windmill was the sky and clouds therefore enhancing the perception of the height of the windmill.

Shoot Nine
Drafting and testing for final piece
Shoot Plan :
For this shoot I want to draft images and ideas for the final piece. I will use images from other shoots to produce the best outcome using my best images. I want to use a common dark and moody theme with the images and to have a series of images have similarities so that they look uniform together when printed. I want to use an image of a lady in a yellow coat that I took a picture of when I was on a photo shoot and use her for all of the images to continue the theme. I plan to use portrait images mixed with images of constructed landscapes, merging both aspects which I have been focusing on previously.

Critical Analysis :
I believe this is my most successful shoot as it presents my best photography combined together with a new style of editing to create my final piece. I have used different aspects from each shoot to create 5 images which I am very pleased to use for my final pieces and supporting evidence. These images were shot in different location such as: London, Cornwall, Oxford, Bristol and even from a plane window! The combination of the different landscapes helps to create a diverse and extreme constructed landscape which is my reflection on what a "Creative Landscape"should look like. These images were all taken using a DSLR which helps to capture the detail within each landscape and has the features to capture and tune the best images. I have edited all of the images using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. I have used these tools in unison to create an overall outcome. I have used Photoshop to construct and piece together each landscape image and I have used Lightroom to tweak and tune the image. I have changed the colours by using a neutral density filter in post processing to create the high contrast and dark, black and white tones of the images. I have also tweaked the brightness, contrast exposure, details, clarity etc which is all made easier by shooting using raw files. In Photoshop I have added some textures to the image to add character and produce a more eerie atmosphere. I have used the image of the lady In the yellow coat as she seemed like a mysterious character to add detail to the image. Her yellow coat added a striking point of interest as the light tones contrasted well with the dark tones by using the neutral density filter. I have tried to use the portrait image of the face in each image, each time with varying success, some times it worked well and others it didn't with me having to either use a different image or even not using a portrait at all. Although this does not follow the theme that I wanted, the three images consist of two images using portrait image and one without- a stand alone constructive landscape.

Final Pieces
These images were selected as they consist of what I believe to be my best editing and using my best images. I have chosen to edit them all in a similar way so when they are printed they follow a consistent colour and editing scheme (dark). These images also contain a similar theme of character within the landscapes and two of them use the same frame of the portrait image.
Evaluation
This project has been very successful. It contains my best work and I feel I have achieved the criteria of "Creative Landscape". My initial ideas for this project were limited as such but as I progressed in both skill and through the project I began to open my eyes to other possible outcomes and ideas.
I began by being influenced by the work of Mathew Wisniewski and his double exposures which Is a common process throughout my whole project. Then I decided to focus on the work produced by Dan Mountford where I created similar style images using his simplistic technique. I soon diverted from that style of work ( portraiture with double exposure ) as I started to create and construct my own landscapes. I did this so that I was not limited by the places I took photos of and so that I could create my own landscape images and make them as extreme or as simplistic as I liked.
Then I introduced a new photographer by the name of Go Sleep who's editing style influenced mine as I created many images in the same style as his. I liked his style as it had a mysterious atmosphere to it and a unique structure to his landscapes. My final pieces were influenced by his technique/style.
I had created many intricate and successful landscapes and I tried to create a colour scheme. Initially I used bright, vibrant colours to create an outer space atmosphere. This developed into a monotone and dark colour scheme with similar levels of success. It was at this time when I experimented with geometric shapes and mixing colour schemes of both bright and bold colours within the dark and monotone landscapes.
At this point in time I had became stuck for Ideas so I started to experiment with different forms of landscapes including trying another constructive landscape, a cartoon flat landscape image and an edge of world landscape, each with varying success.
Following further research I discovered a photographer by the name of Andreas Lie. I was inspired by his work using animals. I set out to take images of a near by horse field/ stables. With the images I had created I constructed a landscape out of trees running down a horse's back in the style of Andreas Lie.
I began drafting Images for the final shoot. It was hard to choose new images as I thought they would not reach the level of quality of the other images I had taken before so I used the old images to create new landscapes. I combined the initial theme of double exposure and the dark monotone colour scheme of the constructive landscapes. As a result I think I have achieved the best outcome using the two styles and combining them together. I feel as the Initial outcomes were successful but could have always been improved but I can see an improvement throughout my project. I have achieved the outcome (Creative Landscape) well and produced good images and many of them.
I could have created more images and outcomes to further explore the theme of Creative Landscape. To Improve I will create more photographer studies and experiments and produce more and more refined images to show a better understanding and skill within the project of Creative Landscape. I can also improve my method of creating the images with using Photoshop as there are many features I have yet to learn and discover which can improve the efficiency of my work. I can also show more of the process and how the images are created either using screen shots or a screen recording device which I have done little of during this project. Although there is one problem with this as there is a long process involved in the making of these images and recording that process will be very hard to showcase. Also to improve I could have kept to the same process and theme (double exposure or constructive landscapes) although I feel this would have made the project less inventive and will limit my ability in showcasing my photography. This is why I have experimented throughout the project to showcase the different aspects of creative landscapes that I have trialled. Further more to improve I could have improved the portraiture aspect of the double exposures, I could have made the model wear a different top to exclude the shape of the school shirt in all of the images and would have made for a more interesting image. I could have also made a better lit image of the face to get a better quality image. I believe the outcome of this project is strong because It shows a broad range of ideas that are influenced by the photographer that I have chosen.
The photographers that I have chosen were skillful and had different techniques and skills within there work which I have used to influence my own ideas and inspired most of my work. I was able to create many images with different techniques and styles, with each style giving me a different level of outcome. I have had many experiments with using different styles of editing such as: cartoon design, edge of world images ,star photography all showing different levels of knowledge towards creating a creative landscape. I have used the visual elements well throughout this project such as: colour, line, texture, aperture, composition and more. I have used these to enhance the original images into a new creative landscape.
Overall this project has been exciting to work on. I have further developed my interests in a range of photographer's work as well as improving my photography skills. It has ignited my passion for photography and developing my unique style of editing.
